Forget the idea that Milk Paint should only be used to achieve the “primitive look.” We’ve given this versatile, time-tested paint a facelift with new color options and fresh ideas on using it to fit your style. These are just a few of the ways Milk Paint can be used:
- Use it on porous surfaces to create a finish that doesn’t chip or flake with time
- Increase the ratio of water to paint to create a colored stain or wash
- Add the Bonding Agent when painting non-porous surfaces to increase adhesion
If the idea of using a powdered paint sounds intimidating, don’t worry! We’ve made video tutorials to walk you through every step of the process, so you can get the look you want and feel confident in your project. Milk Paint
1 Quart will cover approximately 70 sq ft. A tester size will cover about 10 sq ft.
Mix 1 part water to 1 part milk paint powder. Paint may be mixed in a blender, or using am ilk frother, or in a container with a whisk or brush. Add water in first and then add the powder incrementally. Mix for 1-3 minutes until water is absorbed into the powder and the mixture is relatively smooth. Water to powder ratio may be adjusted to achieve desired consistency. Test your consistency on a spare piece of wood. Your mixture should provide good one coat coverage- if your mixture is too thin it will be more transparent and stain like. Add more powder to thicken and stir again. Excess can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. Stir frequently while using as the pigments will settle to the bottom of the container.Typically 1-2 coats is requried. Allow 30 minutes between coats. Finish with Miss Mustard Seed’s Furniture Wax or Hemp Oil Wood Finish.
Bonding Agent
This Milk Paint Bonding Agent allows Milk Paint to adhere to previously painted, varnished, or lacquered surfaces. It will also adhere to metal and glass. This bonding agent is a water-based concentrated emulsion.
How to use this product:
For optimum adhesion, clean the surface to be painted with T.S.P. and sand lightly to roughen the surface. Always test adhesion before applying to a large area.
To use with Milk Paint: For the first coat, mix one part of bonding agent to two parts of milk paint already mixed. For an even strong grip, mix in equal parts. Let the first coat sit for 12 hours. There is no need to add bonding agent to the second coat of Milk Paint.

* Homestead House does its best to display accurate colors online, but the however on-screen colour representations vary from actual paint colours. It is simply a computer representation of the paint colour to help give you an idea of the colour. Every single computer monitor will display these colors differently.
** Although we do our best to ensure exact colour matching, there may be slight batch variations over time due to pigments changing and the aging of the paint. Be sure to mix several cans of paint together of the same colour to ensure that any batch variations are nullified. Also, it is always a good idea to keep a small can of paint used for future touch ups to ensure that you have the exact same colour.
